If you filled every vacancy tomorrow...
Last week, I left you with a question:
What if staffing isn’t actually the problem?
That probably sounds strange coming from someone who has spent years working with organizations struggling to find and keep great people. The vacancies are real. So are the overtime, mandatory callbacks, exhausted employees, and leaders wondering where the next qualified applicant is going to come from.
But a problem can be real without being the root problem.
When an organization tells me, “We can’t find good people,” I’m less interested in the vacancy number than I am in what happened before it.
Where are you looking for people? What are potential applicants learning about your organization before they ever apply? What are you selecting for—and what are you accidentally selecting against?
Then, once someone says yes, what happens next?
What do they experience during onboarding? What does supervision feel like? Do they find belonging, development, and meaningful work—or simply discover how much dysfunction everyone else has learned to tolerate?
Those are Culture Architecture questions.
And they lead somewhere very different from simply asking, How do we get more applicants?
Imagine filling every vacancy tomorrow. Monday morning, your staffing numbers look fantastic.
But the supervisor nobody wants to work for is still there. The schedule people hate is still there. Your onboarding experience is unchanged. Communication is still frustrating. High-performers still have to work around broken processes. And the reputation candidates hear about before applying hasn’t suddenly disappeared.
Did you solve the staffing problem?
Or did you put more people into the same architecture that helped create it?
Staffing may be the outcome we can see while attraction, selection, onboarding, belonging, supervision, development, communication, and reputation are quietly producing it beneath the surface.
And when we misidentify the problem, we predictably invest in the wrong solution: another recruiting campaign, another signing bonus, another retention incentive, another round of overtime.
Then we wonder why we eventually end up right back where we started.
So before we open our first case in The Architecture Files, consider this:
If every vacancy in your organization were magically filled tomorrow, what problems would still be there Monday morning?
Your answer may tell you far more about your staffing problem than the vacancy numbers ever will.
That’s where the investigation begins.

Who's There for You?
The Executive Table is a private, live mastermind reserved exclusively for the #1 or #2 leader in the agency. No presentations. No spectators. No vendors. Just a small group of executives bringing real challenges to the table, sharing what’s working, and helping one another think through what comes next.
This is a cameras-on, fully present conversation. If you reserve a seat, I expect you to occupy it.
Come Thursday, September 17th at 3:30 Eastern, prepared to contribute, ask for help, offer perspective, and spend 30 minutes with other leaders who understand the weight of sitting where you sit.
Ten leaders. One table. Real problems. Private conversation.

One Question to Rule All Others
Confused? Ask This Before You Act. Two seconds. One question. No meditation cushion. No journaling session. Just pause. Inquire. The answer surfaces. Not from thinking—from knowing. Most ignore it because it sounds too simple. Simplicity scares us. We assume complexity equals depth. Wrong. This works because it's true. Ready to hear it?

Boost Your Family's Immune System
I'm a fan of prevention and haven't forgotten what it was like sending my son off to school every year: GERM CENTRAL! It doesn't take long for the sniffles, colds, and flu and crawl back in backpacks and lunch boxes.
Re:Sist is an essential addition to my fall health regimen, and something I recommend for literally every single person I know. The moment you feel like something's off, take it. Your body will thank you for it!
Re:Sist supports the immune system with a unique combination of natural extracts and vitamins. Crude Arthrospira platensis, part of the IMMULINA extract in Re:Sist, has been show to have the ability (1,000 times greater) to balance and enhance the human immune system when compared to other botanical immune stimulation extracts.
- Helps regulate and balance the cascade of body's own immune responses
- Helps strengthen host immune system and enhance defenses
